Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind British Equipment to Locate Afghans That Served Alongside Western Troops, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities failed to secure classified equipment permitting the Taliban to identify Afghans who worked with allied troops.

Data Breach Puts Thousands in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were instructed to change residences and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are currently examining official management of a massive disclosure of private information concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the UK to escape militant rule.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet with their personal data, comprising names, contact details and occasionally household data, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at British military command in last year.

The breach came to light months later, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to move to Britain appeared on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is this misconception that the Taliban do not have comparable resources that we have,” Person A informed the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire mobile details, they are able to track you down to within metres. That is what the unit accomplished.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban possessed necessary encryption, the source declared: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine kin and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A superinjunction concerning the breach was put in force in last year and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, the source and the non-governmental organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and altered their phone numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if authorities acquired these details, would result in identification and capture,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A disputed that an official review carried out by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to conclude that the obtaining of the information by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to past work history.”

She detailed horrific abuse suffered by affected individuals, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
