Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
