New York's next mayor confirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, it will always live within me and my work," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his humble Astoria digs.
With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
