The English Team to Begin the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the anticipated entry for a competition taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an England men’s match since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to welcome the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Opening and Rally
The championship was launched at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they entered the venue by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.
Placards were raised with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Timeline
The opening game of the European Championship will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will include Wales if they make it.
The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to families and help connect with a broader range of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on the tournament through that route.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and The North London arena round out the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches played at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be staged in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a tournament for the fans and a festival of everything we love about the football – its passion and power to unite individuals.”
In excess of three million passes, a record for a Euro tournament, are projected to be released to attendees.
