The Gruesome Cartoon Film Ending That Haunts Fans
Among every adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve ever watched, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the dread-soaked conclusion of the viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director developed a dark, somber and often savage world with several minor , desolate twinges of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to push animation further, the director stated that it was more an effort to express a global, multicultural theme regarding “the common origin of every conflict.”
This theme is conveyed through a band of colorful pastel bears , obviously modeled after a famous series of lovable figures.
Maturing in a culture built around aggression as well as the military-industrial complex, many of the bears are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, because of a sacred text which states them they used to be rulers of the forest, until these creatures expelled them.
A few did not entirely accepted the indoctrination, and prefer to try out narcotics and engage sexually in the forest.
In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these bright beings have visible sexual organs and obvious libidos.
For a particular notably brutal, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the battle against unicorns becomes a path toward dominance — and specifically to dominance over his more tender, nicer brother the character Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , a seeming antisocial figure , and when terror dominates his group and takes his comrades individually, he grabs progressively influence on his own behalf, via progressively gory, harmful methods.
At the same time, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, in the form of a spreading, deadly beast in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “Yet it turns into a more intense and sad movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars begins resembling among the playful films from an iconic animator, that discover a mischievous joy in letting animated figures swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Then it evolves into more akin to a bleaker work from that creator, featuring progressively graphic violence and a tangible connection to the real tragedy of battle.
By the end, it becomes a complete Grand Guignol massacre.
The terror which makes the film a perfect Halloween watch starts well before than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the most dedicated gorehounds, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who wish to view a film they have not watched previously, and who can handle a narrative which delivers absolutely no punches.
Watch it in a dark room free from interruptions, and the finale will crawl deep within you and take up residence there.
