The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
