The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- Post-war administration of the territory
Public Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling endured the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No location appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about the majority of the population desire the hostilities to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"As the evening arrives, the dread comes with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"We are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had received the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two fatalities had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, medical staff stated.
