UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
