What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
